People in positions of power love saying that activists are fighting for equality. We’re not. We’re fighting for justice, and there’s a difference.
Equality would mean black men getting away with rape. Equality would mean Asian cops getting away with murdering black men. Equality would mean abusive mothers receiving full custody because the father must be guilty of “alienation”.
Nobody should have such privilege. Justice is the removal of egregious privilege. Justice means subjecting those in power to the same standards they force upon others. Justice means uplifting some and lowering others.
I was taught from a young age: Justice, justice, you shall pursue. This is why I reject the concept of “egalitarianism” as lazy and regressive. This is why my answer to oppressors when they ask “Don’t you want [insert oppressed and oppressor of your choice here] to be equal?” is no. That is nothing but a poor imitation of what I’m striving for.
